Frequently Asked Questions

TriDef 3D Ignition

What is TriDef 3D Ignition?

TriDef 3D Ignition is a game driver that enables popular PC games to be played in stereoscopic 3D. Its features include:

  • Support for a wide range of DirectX 9/10/11 PC games.
  • High performance "Power 3D" rendering mode for faster performance.
  • Unique "Auto Focus" technology to improve 3D rendering.
  • Game Profiles that can be customized and shared online.
How does TriDef 3D Ignition work?

PC games which use Microsoft's DirectX graphics system already contain all the information needed to produce high quality 3D images. The TriDef 3D Ignition game driver provides a communication interface between the game and the DirectX graphics engine. The game itself does not need to include support for 3D. When the game draws graphics using DirectX, TriDef 3D Ignition translates this into a 3D format suitable for the display.

What is a TriDef Game Profile?

Game Profiles are used to configure the TriDef 3D Ignition game driver to work optimally with a specific game. If there is no pre-defined profile for your game simply select the "Generic" profile.

A large number of DDD certified profiles come pre-packaged with TriDef 3D Ignition. When adding a new game, please check to see if a specific profile already exists for this game.

How do I create a new Game Profile?

To create a new Game Profile for a game that is not already listed, add the game to TriDef 3D Ignition and select the "Generic" profile as a starting point. Launch the game from within TriDef 3D Ignition by double clicking the game's icon.

When the game is running press "Num 0" to open the OSD and adjust settings as necessary. In particular, if the rendering is corrupted try toggling the "Row-Major Matrix" option in the OSD Profile → 3D Object Detection menu. If the scene is not in 3D, try changing the mode in the 3D Object Detection menu or go to Matrix Names and tick all of the names containing "Proj".

Select "Save Game Profile" in the Profile menu. A message will be displayed to tell you where the new game profile is located. This new Game Profile can be emailed to your friends or uploaded to the Online Forum.

Why should I visit the online forum?

The Online Forum is a great place to share information, post screenshots and get technical help for 3D gaming.

What is Auto Focus and how does it work?

Auto Focus is a proprietary technology that is unique to TriDef 3D Ignition. To produce 3D effects the position of each object in the game is mapped into the stereoscopic volume so it appears to either float in front of the screen or behind the screen. To produce 3D effects the position of each object in the game is mapped into the stereoscopic volume so it appears to either float in front of the screen or behind the screen.

Games can simulate radically different environments from wide open landscapes to cramped dungeons. Traditionally 3D game drivers have used a fixed mapping across such different environments. Auto Focus, by comparison, analyses each frame rendered by the game and adjusts the 3D according to the type of environment encountered.

Alternatively, if you are an advanced user and want manual control over the focus parameters, then turn Custom Focus on. This allows you to set the Near Plane and Far Plane manually.

What is the benefit of using Power 3D mode?

TriDef 3D Ignition has two 3D rendering modes. The standard 3D mode operates in the traditional manner by rendering two views from within the game environment. This approach produces high quality 3D but performance can be reduced as it is necessary to render the DirectX scene twice, once for the left eye and once for the right eye.

Power 3D is a method of improving performance by using information from the Z-buffer in the DirectX graphics pipeline. The Z-buffer measures the distance to objects in the scene. This information can be used to synthesise virtual stereoscopic 3D views. As it is only necessary to render the DirectX scene once Power 3D runs significantly faster than the traditional stereo 3D mode. Frame rates can be increased by as much 50%. The trade-off for this performance boost is that quality of the 3D can be lower. In particular, Power 3D mode cannot see behind objects which can lead to some distortions around edges.

How do I adjust the 3D settings for a specific game?

To access the 3D controls select "3D" from the OSD. There are two main parameters that change the 3D effect. The "Scene Depth" setting controls the overall amount of 3D or 3D strength in the game. The "Percent In Front" setting controls the 3D positioning. The greater the Percent In Front value the more objects appear to float in front of the screen.

How do I play a game in 2D?

TriDef 3D Ignition is only loaded when the game is launched from an icon in the TriDef 3D Ignition application interface.

To launch the game in 2D without using TriDef 3D Ignition, simply run the game from its original shortcut in the Start menu or Desktop.

If you've recently played a game in 3D, you may need to exit game launchers such as Steam prior to running a game in 2D.

To switch back to 2D while playing the game in 3D press "Alt+Shift+-". Alternatively, you can open the TriDef 3D Ignition OSD, navigate to the "3D" menu and turn 3D off.

How do I take a 3D screenshot?

Press "PrtScn (Sys Req)" whilst playing the game. Alternatively, open the TriDef 3D Ignition OSD and select "3D Screenshot" from the menu.

3D screenshots are stored under a "TriDef 3D" subfolder in your "Pictures" (or "My Pictures") area. After successfully taking a 3D Screenshot, a message will appear near the bottom left hand corner of the display showing the location of the screenshot. They are created in several different formats: TriDefPhoto, above-below, and anaglyph. TriDefPhotos can be viewed using TriDef 3D Media Player.

The gun sight in my game isn't accurate in 3D. How do I fix this?

2D gun sights can be inaccurate when targeting objects in a stereoscopic 3D game. TriDef 3D Ignition provides an optional Laser Sight for improved targeting in first person shooters.

If the Laser Sight is not already enabled in your Game Profile then open the OSD and navigate to the "Laser Sight" menu. From here you can turn the Laser Sight on or off and customise its appearance.

Note: in more advanced game profiles the game's original gun sight can also be removed.

Why does my game behave strangely when I press a TriDef 3D Ignition hotkey?

Some hotkeys may conflict with a game's controls. If this occurs, choose a different hotkey on the Game Properties dialog.

My game is running too slowly in 3D, what can I do?

Playing a game in 3D requires more processing power than playing in 2D. If a game does not run smoothly in 2D then it is unlikely that you will get an acceptable result in 3D.

There are two main options for improving 3D performance:

  1. Change the graphics settings in the game. Typically games will enable you to change the resolution of the game as well as enable/disable advanced graphics settings like anti-aliasing. To improve performance, reduce the resolution and turn off or reduce the quality of various graphics settings in the game.
  2. Adjust TriDef 3D Ignition performance settings on the OSD "Performance" menu. Power 3D mode can provide a significant speed increase. Reducing the Quality setting can also increase the frame rate.

A more detailed guide to performance tuning is available in our Online Forum.
